Syncing
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
After I finish with my current w.i.p, i'm thinking about syncing music. I was just wondering what dci music you guys would enjoy being synced.

Winged Victory
The opening portion of Faust

I was thinking faust, but has someone already done it? Anyone else have another song they'd like?
Test123 1 month ago
Well, there's too much Phantom syncing out there.
What about "The Phenomenon of Cool" or "!"
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
What year was phenomenon again?
I was thinking about doing a crown show maybe as well, and then star of indiana is a possibility.
Yoyoyo 1 month ago
We will never run out of phantom stuff.
There's still 2005 and 1989.
Danderson 1 month ago
Phenomenon of Cool was 2003 I believe... Pretty good show. Anyone remember when they played Awayday by Adam Gorb? That was a sweet show.
thsgemb08 1 month ago
try to do a star of indiana show. i dont think anyone has done that. or scv 89?
MSeltz 1 month ago
Awayday was 2001. Man...I'm so used to DCP that hearing these questions is so weird!
Corpsreps.com is your friend. :) Someone needs to do a Madison 01 show, or if someone can track down a recording Blue Knights 03. Or any BD show from the 70's or 90's.

Phantom 02 opener. Not my favorite uniforms, but I love Shostakovich's 10th symphony more than air.
Cavies 95, 99, 00, 01, 04, 05. (02, 03, and 06 I thought were perfect drill-wise, so I don't want anyone doing those. ;P 00 was almost perfect, too)

I have a few out-of-the-maindtram sync ideas- but I'm saving a few of them for myself and won't discuss them...yet.
;) The real key is finding clips that represent a complete idea that are also short enough to be doable in 32 sets. As much as I like PR- it is time to start seeing a wider variety of stuff. I chose the last number I did for a few reasons- I really like the piece (very important because when you sync you'll have to listen to it a LOT)- It's a manageable length (about 90-120 seconds once you cut out the long pit intro)- It has a fairly simple structure so is a good candidate for a first piece to sync to, and it was a power ballad, which we haven't seen too much of. Phantom is getting a little played out here, I think I'd actually like to see someon sync to the 97 show. However, what I'd really like to see is shows synced to lesser known shows, or even senior/DCA shows. The ultimate goal would be to produce an entirely original show- compose the music electronically, and add drill.

how about The Crossmen 2002? pretty good music, and definitely isn't in the mainstream...
Danderson 1 month ago
I haven't heard anyone sync anything to West Side Story yet. That's some pretty good stuff right there.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
MSeltz, The scouts '01 was my first thought.
And thanks to everyone else, there's some pretty good ideas on here.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
I'm thinking either scouts '01, any star of indiana year, cadets 1994, or 05 PR.
VinnyE 1 month ago
How about 97 Madison? Everyone likes a pirate! Arrrrrrrr.
Well, that one relies a bit too much on guard props/costumes for MML Plus it would be hard to convey the "hold that lasts forever" while the DM takes snapshots of the crowd part. There are some aspects of performance that are almost impossible to capture without actual performers. Still, the show is exciting, and very visual.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
Quick question guys, since Send in the clowns has been done, what about "may you never walk alone"?
Jerry 1 month ago
Star '91...do it.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
yeah, i just thought about it, and the scouts corps song doesn't have drumline so that wouldn't make since.
Star 91 it is.
Jerry 1 month ago
Yesssss.
Yoyoyo 1 month ago
SCV never used "send in the clowns" in a field show...I think.
They usually play it for warm ups and encores. I don't think any stand still tunes should be synced to unless they were put on the field, well that's just me. And no one has done "clowns" on mml.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
oh, yoyoyo, i forgot that you didn't sync 'clowns' I just remembered you doing it and forgot that it was just a tribute.
Yoyoyo 1 month ago
Since we're all on the same idea of what to sync...I was thinking of doing a cadets year maybe 1999 closer, or 1989, maybe 2000. Their closers are always so great, drill and music wise.
Yoyoyo 1 month ago
Any suggestions?...
Kasey Warren 1 month ago
i second the closer thought
thsgemb08 1 month ago
do cadets 2000. i love that show. if only there were some way to put that amazing drum/ trumpet feature on mml...
also, scv did use send in the clowns on the field, back in 1974 and 1976 (woo corpreps!)
William Colwell 1 month ago
I'm syncing the Ave Maria phantom did in their 2007 show...I'm almost done!
Danderson 1 month ago
Do you mean 2006?
William Colwell 1 month ago
whoops sorry yeah I mean 2006...i should have just said Faust.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
Does anyone know how to get a certain spot in the music to play on a loop? I don't feel like rewinding every time i get done listening.
VinnyE 1 month ago
Anyone up for syncing an indoor drumline show? (or at least a parking lot clip of a Corps' battery)
;)
Danderson 1 month ago
Oh wait! You can to Moto Perpetuo! Then the person walking around in the back will make sense!
lol
thsgemb08 1 month ago
ha, danderson.
and VinnyE, you gave me a good idea...im starting one now but dont want to release any more details than that.
VinnyE 1 month ago
It's ok, I held off on mentioning the drumline idea long enough to finish the one I was working on:
micromarching.com/show/8w4/91-bones It didn't score that well, but I don't really care- It was a fun experience, and I had the honor of "opening pandora's box" so to speak. Frankly, I'm surprised no one has done a synced percussion show yet- there are so many parking lot clips available to work with- and anyone with a decent digital recording device and the time to visit shows can get new material easily.
Jerry 1 month ago
VinnyE...you just gave me an idea.
=)
Yoyoyo 1 month ago
Some wgi lines would be good to sync to as well.
VinnyE 1 month ago
Yoyoyo - Mr Mcmusic challenged me to do a guard show with music... I'm considering taking him up on his offer... The audio track I have in mind will need a little editing to make it work.
Watch some WGI shows on youtube - it will be difficult or almost impossible to capture the same kind of mood. WGI shows are very three dimensional when you account for props, body work, and equipment tosses. Real guards can work with layers of visual elements that we just can't. In any case- if I do it, the music I have in mind will be...weird, even for WGI ;)
VinnyE 1 month ago
Oops- I just realized you were talking about wgi drum lines... my comment about indoor guard still stands though.
thsgemb08 1 month ago
i just finished a synced show tonight, just need to film, edit it and get it onto youtube. it should be up before 2 tomorrow afternoon, if not, probs closer to 4 or 5 (eastern time).
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
Ok, I know I said I was going to sync 91 star, but i'm thinking I should start with something a little easier. Does anyone know a really good ballad? VinnyE you did that really awesome russian peice, maybe you could help.
VinnyE 1 month ago
For a decent ballad, hmm... here's a few ideas-
Adagio for Strings (SCV 2000) Dream of the Return (Crossmen '91) Somewhere (west side story- '84 and 91 cadets) One Hand One Heart (Blue Devils '98) On my Own (Cadets '89) from les mis Bring him Home (Cadets 89) from les mis Just a few ideas, there's a lot out there to work with, espcially if you look back into the 80s.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
Ok, thanks vinny. Somewhere is one of my favorite maynard peices, maybe i'll go with that since i'm familiar with it.
thsgemb08 1 month ago
