How Do You Pursue Happiness?

Keyo Wilson 1 month ago
I've seen snippets of The Cadets 2008 show and a little bit of behind the scenes behind the whole show concept...

I think this has inspired me to start a new and rather interesting topic on MML...

How do YOU pursue happiness?

I guess I'll start...I think of happiness as satisfaction. The more productive I am, the more I get out of what I do. This goes for anything I do, class, job, even eating, haha...

Just as there is a law for gravity (what goes up must come down), there is also another law that says what goes in must come out. For example, you cannot take out money from your account without putting money in.

I learned this from Cadets 2007...no second of my life should be wasted because I will never earn it back. Regardless of how bad life can sometimes get, I cannot give up, and in the process, I become happier after I overcome obstacles.

So...your turn. There are no wrong answers nor are there cheesy answers.

The Cadets are describing their pursuit of happiness...how about YOU?

I liked that movie.

It was a good movie, and this should could have been amazing if it followed some form of similar story.

Actually, most of this show is still pretty amazing.

Wow, if The Cadets based their show on the movie, it would be phenomenal.
Although I can't stand their show design, I could never deny them their amazing marching, and gorgeous sound.

And I don't know how to address the original question... other than I just do what makes me happy. That's it. lol

"Do what you love and love what you do"

that's how I find my happiness, which is why I also decided to be a music major, I love music and everything about it.

exactly steve, "if you love love what you do, then you'll never work a day in your life"

Any kind of creative project for me is happiness. That's why, over the years, I've dabbled in a lot of different things: programming, game design, art, music, or whatever. It's even better if someone else actually likes what I've made. =)

You must be a very happy man right now then.

so joe?
When your done updating these meraculous projects on this site, do you lean back in your chair and say to your self, "WOW"?
Joe Lesko captain1 month ago
No, I'm constantly dissatisfied with MML as a project. But the stuff you guys come up with makes it worth it. Whenever I start getting a bit jaded, someone does something that really surprises me.

Also, today I was happy when someone put up a show with an inappropriate description and four others members were extremely considerate about asking the designer to change it. So yes, it's cheesy, but I'm happy when the community is all getting along.

Wasn't I the first to comment on that one.

I pursure happ(i)ness with music. I've been lucky to be successful in it, and I want to have a career that'll make me feel rewarded and happy. Other things make me feel happy, but most of all, it's music that stands out. Music has no boundries, so happ(i)ness has no boundries.

Kasey you just completely stole was I was going to say.
Right on with your statement thought.

I pursue happiness by passing on whatever knowledge that I have to the next generation...

To pursue happiness, I want to learn how to utilize my abilites in order to teach life values through music education.

I really wish the general population could see that music education is much more than "just people walking around on a field" or "a bunch of people moving while they play instruments on a stage."

Music education isn't just an activity to do for fun. It's an activity to help you prepare for life.
Kasey Warren 1 month ago
music ed. is not just marching
Jerry 1 month ago
That's why I said music education and not marching band...

I can't count how many times my friends who aren't in band say all we do is walk around and play our instruments. I get pretty frustrated with people telling me what I do, when I know more than well it is 10 times more complicated then they're making it out to be.

That's because you live in Texas - the football capital of America. Even if marching band is outstanding there, you'll always be rediculed of what's harder or what's more difficult.
DocMcFluhry 1 month ago
And most bands in Indiana don't get a lot of credit because it's considered the basketball capital of America. Wise up people, band is tough.
mellophone1 1 month ago
and ny bands dont get much credit because of lacrosse, at least in my part of the state. :(
Keyo Wilson 1 month ago
Now that you guys mentioned marching band, that's also where I find happiness.

As far as credit goes to marching band or drum corps...I will say this:

There is an old quote about drum corps that states "For those who know it, no explanation is needed...for those who do not know it, no explanation is possible."

Same thing for marching band, especially since marching band gets no publicity on ESPN2 (nowadays it REALLY should) and people who have never done marching band before put assumptions on it...

Pursue happiness?... hmmmm

in a more general adress, i believe not many people in our world actually pursue happiness but rather what they are good at but not necessarily like or what brings home the bacon, what have you... I believe people put their lives first and happiness second and also maybe that some of us can't afford to pursue what makes us truly happy but we simply settle for what enables us to survive... you know primitive instincts.

on a more personal note... until now i haven't really thought about being happy but more or less establishing my existence in this world, by being successful in the music world so i can one day achieve my goals of becoming a good high school band director, and after that owning a resturaunt. but as for now happines to me comes from the people around me. I TRY, sometimes unsuccessfully, to be a good person to always do the right thing and to uphold moral standards this world has long forgotten. when i succeed and i se myself as a good person i am happy.

also cooking makes me happy, nothing feeds your own soul like giving someone else a great meal. and lastly in my struggle with music anytime i finally stop continually overcriticizing my playing and i find what i have performed is actually decent i am happy to know i am improving.

as for the marching band stereotype thing...

i once had an acquaintance last year who ran cross country and would run by the marching band every day. (he plays clarinet in concert band) one day in english i don't remember how the subject came up but in the debate he says ... well you guys are just walking around out their its not hard... to this i reply... well you guys just run you don't even need a brain to do that any idiot can run three miles as long as he's in shape you can be the strongest fastest athlete and not succeed well in marching band, it takes multi-tasking, focus, breath control, playing well and marching well on top of all this.

my opinion is that the marching arts cannot be explained through words but can only be taught through experiencing it yourself.
